:: ICT Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar is at the leading edge of using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) effectively to support learning and teaching. It is also committed to providing a range of opportunities and resources to support students’ use of ICT.
There are three computer suites which together contain 50 PCs located in the main building as well as another computer suite with 15 PCs in the Art Centre building for students’ use. The computer suites are all equipped with latest Pentium PCs with flat screen integrated into the School's LAN and networked throughout the whole Kolej. This is a wireless network system with high speed connection to the Internet. The access to internet is filtered and monitored to ensure students use it for academic purpose only. The computer suites are also equipped with a laser printers, scanners, LCD projector and related equipment. A variety of software of special interest to students is available on each computer in the computer suites, including Microsoft Office 2003 (with Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), Microsoft Publisher, Movie Maker, Internet Explorer, Multimedia software such as Flash and other software running under the Windows XP professional operating system. Students at KTJ are all provided with a personal file store to save their work and each student is given a personal email address. Our expectation is that students will have every opportunity to learn using the latest technology and that they will leave the School as highly proficient users of ICT. :: Careers One of the great strengths of our College is the support we offer to our students when they are making decisions about their futures.
Proper Guidance & Counselling Careers guidance is concerned with individual choices. The basis of careers guidance is a one-to-one interview which allows the students to have the opportunity to explore and discuss their personal career plans, to make informed decision and to take appropriate action. All students are entitled to make use of the careers interview service on a self-referral basis, or may be referred by tutors. The Careers Service is staffed by two teachers who provide guidance for all students in the top four years of the school. The Careers Room, based in the Sixth Form Centre, is open to all upper school students on a regular basis. The room contains extensive information on careers, Higher Education and relevant background material, such as university prospectus and funding for studies, etc. In addition, staffs are available to help to access information from worldwide-web. Up-to-Date Information & First-Hand Exposure Appropriate and effective information and guidance helps students make a smooth transition from school to higher education and can be a source of motivation for success on courses. It also underpins successful progression to appropriate opportunities on leaving school and enables the students to manage their future career related decisions. Special events include Annual Careers Convention, a day of information sessions on employment, training and higher education, are organized just for KTJ students. Keynote speakers from a wide range of professions and universities come from across the region and beyond to help the students to obtain up to date and accurate information.
:: Library
The nerve centre of any good school should be the Library. KTJ’s library holds 20,000 volumes, as well as offering a wide range of periodicals and newspapers, from Malaysia and round the world.
As is appropriate for this digital age, students also have access to 17 PCs to support their research, not to mention their email contacts. The library also stocks CDs, DVDs and videos to help students. An important question for any library is ‘how often is it open?’ KTJ’s library is open seven days a week and from 8.30 am until 6.30 pm during the week. The qualified librarian and his full-time assistant, supported by the senior students who serve as library monitors, work enthusiastically and tirelessly to ensure the collection of materials is up-to-date and available. There is also a purposeful atmosphere dedicated to ensuring students have as productive time as possible while they are in the Library.
:: Sports
One of the major attractions in KTJ ‘s 80 acre site is the range of sporting facilities available to students. In 2007 two new fields for rugby and football were created, with the special grass being watered by a state-of-the-art sprinkler system. Apart from these sports, the students can play such team games as basketball, hockey, cricket, netball and volleyball. In addition, they can take part in more individual sports such as swimming, tennis, squash and badminton. Golf can be played on the Staffield course next door.
Fixtures are undertaken against a range of other schools, both within the state and further afield. The School looks forward to competing with other international schools following its joining of Fobissea in 2007. |
