CHINESE CULTURAL WEEK AT KOLEJ TUANKU JA�AFAR (18th � 23rd Jan)

New Year came early to Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar in the shape of Chinese cultural week, orchestrated by Lower 6^th Petronas Scholars, which culminated in a superb concert on Saturday evening for the enjoyment of their sponsors, parents, staff and students.

Activities during the week were many and varied. Competitions included: card-making, calligraphy, Chinese Chess, Tai Chi and Martial Arts and a fun telematch. The Chinese Bazaar was open to customers seeking Chinese food and attendance at all activities clearly demonstrated their popularity.

The concert, held in the lavishly decorated Tuanku Najihah Hall, was attended by the Petronas Scholars’ sponsors. A traditional and spectacular Lion dance opened the proceedings. This vivid creature was thrilling to watch and amazingly expressive and acrobatic. It was a hard act to follow, but the players of the 24 Festive Drums from Chung Hua High School in Seremban, mesmerised the audience. They finished to thunderous applause, leaving the audience evidently wanting more. Likewise, the children’s choir from Chung Hua Primary school in Mantin, was immediately taken to the hearts of the audience. Their tuneful rendition of a traditional Chinese folk song was perfect in every way.

Other notable acts followed. KTJ students performed a traditional Chinese Fan dance, a demonstration of the Wushu styles of the Martial Arts, and a hilarious sketch, written for the occasion, entitled ‘Meeting the Parents’.

The talents displayed during the week were celebrated in the prize giving section of the evening. The winners, invited on stage to rapturous applause to receive their prizes, included ‘Miss Cheongsam’ and ‘Mr Sam Foo’, who were interviewed in true pageant style.

One of the questions asked of a ‘Mr Sam Foo’ contestant was, ‘Why are there different people in the world? Why aren’t we all the same?’ The response was swiftly delivered, ‘To make the world more interesting.’ The Petronas Scholars certainly played their part this week in making the world a more interesting place. They ably demonstrated that celebrating the differences is an effective way of bringing people together.

Jonathan Chia Yik Meng, who spearheaded the organisation of the week, was representing the Petronas Scholars, when he said he was ‘more than pleased’ with the success of the week. All activities were well attended and ran smoothly. It was an extremely enjoyable week.

It only remains to wish everyone, ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’.

PMR Success

Well done to last year’s Form 3 Local for their excellent PMR results! Over 80% of their grades were As and Bs, which is a tribute to the hard work of students and teachers. Congratulations to Syed Ali Al Hadi Bin Syed Mustaffa for achieving straight As in his eight subjects.

RECORD NUMBERS AT KTJ

Helped by the new Alia House, a record number of students are attending KTJ this term. Over 600 boys and girls are enrolled , including 200 in the Sixth Form. With another 36 students joining the Lower Sixth in January, the total comes to 110 students taking AS Levels this year.

ALIA HOUSE OPEN

January 10th saw the arrival of the first students into Alia House. After months of finishing and furnishing, the doors were opened to 65 girls this term. Under the watchful eye of Ms Marcel Campbell, the Housemistress, supported by Ms Esmeralda and Ms Rajni as tutors, we look forward to the new girls’ house making a big impact in the School.

A LEVEL SUCCESS

Well done to last year’s Upper Sixth formers for their outstanding A Level results announced in August. 27 students achieved straight A grades and, overall, over 80% of the grades were A or B. This is a superb achievement and reflects a great deal of hard work by our students and their teachers.
