Inspiring Students to Lead Beyond Limits

The FOBISIA Student Leadership Conference 2026 brought together 180 student leaders from schools across Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Singapore. This year’s conference focused on the theme Leading Beyond Limits, inspiring students to embrace challenges, think boldly and grow through adversity. Hosted by Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar (KTJ) International School on their 80-acre campus, the three-day event featured engaging talks and adventurous activities, including raft-building on the school’s lake!

Keynote speaker Rob Lilwall, NatGeo TV adventurer, delivered an inspiring talk to students and staff as he detailed his remarkable experience cycling 50,000 kilometres from China to the UK. Along his journey, Rob confronted extreme weather (-40°C in Siberia!) and difficult terrain to discover that adopting a positive mindset, embracing new opportunities, and building relationships with others are essential qualities of effective leadership.

The conference intentionally invited perspectives on leadership from a range of sectors. Mak Joon Nien, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, shared his insights on navigating the nation’s oldest financial institution through an era of innovation and growth. World Squash Champion Datuk Nicol David emphasised the importance of resilience and mental fortitude in overcoming challenges and achieving greatness. Additionally, James Bennett and Noel Sullivan, Directors of London Theatrical Arts (LITA) and West End actors, led an interactive workshop exploring leadership development through dance and drama.

A Student Leadership Conference wouldn’t be complete without contributions from our incredible student leaders! KTJ student Cassie partnered with Nadia Hanim, a Leading Socialpreneur and Corporate Affairs Leader, to deliver a talk on Leadership for Social Change. Reflecting on her experience, Cassie expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, sharing one key takeaway:
“Just do it! So often, I struggle with anxiety and self-doubt. But then I realised that I could inspire other students by demonstrating that anyone, regardless of age, has the power to create positive change.”

The students participated in a variety of workshops, including sessions on debate, leadership in community service, and an exciting raft-building challenge. On the final evening of the conference, delegates attended a social event, providing an opportunity for students from schools across Asia to interact and network while enjoying food, games and karaoke.
KTJ student and conference delegate Amir bin Wahid said, “The conference has really broadened my perspective. I’ve met people from a range of backgrounds and cultures and created memories that I’ll treasure forever.”

KTJ extends its sincere appreciation to all student delegates, accompanying staff, speakers, and workshop facilitators whose efforts contributed to the success of this FOBISIA event. Special thanks are also due to Mr Andrew Chessell and Ms Punitha Rajagopol of KTJ for their dedicated work in making this event possible.
